How to Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather

The days of lounging on the beach in the sun is, unfortunately, becoming a thing of the past in Ottawa. With the cold quickly approaching, all homeowners should take certain steps to ensure their home is “winterized”. Here are a few you should do before the first snow fall:

Clean out your rain gutters: Leaves and other debris will clog your gutters, which could create an ice dam on your roof.

Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan: In the summer months, the fans are tilted to provide an air conditioning effect, and in the winter, you can turn the fan in the other direction to circulate the warm air.

Close outside vents to your house as soon as it starts to get cold: Closing the vents will help winterize your home.

Have your chimney inspected: If you have a fireplace or chimney make sure to get it inspected. A leak in the chimney could cause an extreme spike in heating costs.

Insulate walls and attic: Just like your chimney, make sure to insulate your walls, windows and attics. There could be tiny leaks that cause your heat to escape and cold air to come in.
