Haunted Places in Ottawa

Halloween is coming up next Friday which means it’s time for Ottawans to get into the spooky spirit! With a city as old and historical as Ottawa, there’s bound to be a few “haunted places”. Take a peek at these locations this weekend…if you dare!

Ottawa Jail Hostel: Many prisoners met their death while remaining in this jail. One particular ghost that is said to lurk the halls of the hostel is Patrick James Whelan. Many tourists have claimed to see this apparition writing, wandering the area, and walking towards the old gallows.  Free tours are at 11 am every day and you can end your tour with a cold beer or cider at their unique pub! If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can stay the night for 30 dollars a night.

Bytowne Museum: This building is said to be haunted by Colonel John By, the builder of the canal, and his assistant General Duncan McNab. The reported paranormal activities issue with electronic equipment including televisions going on and off by themselves and strange messages appearing on computer screens in empty rooms. For an additional Halloween fright, visit their doll exhibit which is said to be the most haunted room in the museum.

Haunted Walking Tour: If you’re interested in getting to know the darker side of Ottawa’s history, join one of Ottawa’s most famous downtown tours for their 18th season. Tickets are available at their office on Sparks street and the tours run into the late evening. Tickets are $19 for adults and $11 for children 12 and under.

Wishing everyone a spooky, but safe weekend!
