Fun Fall Activity: Apple Picking.
Fun Fall Activity-Apple Picking!
The weather is getting cooler, and to some that may signal the end of summer, but to others it means the start of a new adventure—apple picking! Apple picking is a great fall activity for the whole family and Ottawa is one of the best places to do it in. Here are a few tips if you’re going apple picking this weekend:
1) Do your research: Go online and research what type of orchard you’re looking for. You’d be surprised at how many options there are out there. With everything from organic to conventional, make sure you make the best decision for you and your family.
2) Don’t throw the apples into your basket: This one sounds fairly obvious, but in the moment you may be tempted to just throw your apples into the basket. This is the biggest cause of apple bruising and could result in that perfect apple becoming spoiled.
3) Talk to the farmer: When visiting a local apple orchard, most farmers are more than willing to help you with your apple picking needs. Don’t hesitate to chat with them. They can provide you with tips to help you pick the apple the closest to ready and fit your needs.
4) You don’t have to pick the perfect apple: Unlike many of the apples you see in your grocery stores, most apple orchards feature organic apples that can look a little beaten up. This is just natural for organic apples and make sure not to avoid that apple because of a little bruise!
